# How to create a campaign

This article walks through building a campaign from the first click to switching it on.

***

### Before you start

**Set up your email settings.** A campaign does not send mail of its own — it sends your program's emails, through your program's sending setup. The sender name, sender address, reply-to address, sending domain and email branding all come from **Emails** under **Partner portal**. Whatever is configured there is what partners see in their inbox, so get it right before a campaign starts sending on your behalf. See [Email settings](/knowledge-base/program-emails/email-settings).

**Write the emails you want to send.** A **Send email** step can only use the custom emails you have written for your program. Writing those first makes building the sequence quicker, though you can also create an email without leaving the builder — see [Choosing the email a step sends](#choosing-the-email-a-step-sends) below.

***

### Create the campaign

1. In your program, navigate to **Campaigns** under **Program**.
2. Click **Create campaign**.
3. Pick a starting point. A new campaign opens on a gallery of templates:
   * **Start from scratch** gives you an empty sequence, and you choose the trigger and add every step yourself.
   * A template arrives with its trigger, its waits and its branches already set. You only choose the emails it sends.
4. Give the campaign a name at the top of the builder. The name is for you — partners never see it.
5. Set the entry trigger, add your steps, then click **Save**.

Saving does not start the campaign. A new campaign is always saved switched off, so you can build it over several sittings without anybody being enrolled in a half-finished sequence.

### Starting from a template

Templates exist because working out the timing of a sequence from an empty canvas is the hardest part of making one. There are six:

| Template | Starts when | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| Partner welcome sequence | A partner joins the program | Greets them, waits, then splits on whether they have referred anybody yet |
| First sale celebration | A partner earns their first commission | Congratulates them, then follows up with what to do for the second |
| Motivation push | A partner reaches 5 signups | Pushes toward 10, saying something different depending on whether they got there |
| Nudge quiet partners | A partner has not referred anybody in 60 days | Sends fresh ideas, and lets them back in 120 days later if they go quiet again |
| Partner reactivation | A partner has been inactive for 30 days | Makes two attempts a week apart before letting them go |
| Anniversary thank-you | A partner's joining anniversary | Thanks them, and runs again every year they stay |

A template deliberately arrives with no emails chosen. The only emails a step can send are ones you have written yourself, so the template cannot know which to use. Every **Send email** step in a fresh template is waiting for you to pick one, and the campaign will not switch on until they all have.

Picking a different template replaces whatever is currently in the builder, including a name you have typed. Use the **Templates** link in the page header to go back to the gallery.

### Set the entry trigger

The **Entry** card is the first node in the sequence. Choose what puts a partner into the campaign under **When**.

Some triggers need more detail:

* **Partner reaches milestone** asks for a metric, a comparison and a value — for example Signups, greater than or equal to, 10.
* **Partner anniversary**, **Partner inactive for X days** and **Partner hasn't referred in X days** ask for a number of days.
* **Tag is assigned to partner** asks which tags count. You can select more than one.

The full list is in [Entry triggers and re-entry](/knowledge-base/campaigns/entry-triggers-and-re-entry).

Underneath the trigger, **If they qualify again** decides what happens when the same partner meets the trigger a second time. The default, *Never re-enter*, means each partner goes through the campaign at most once.

### Add steps

Click **Add step** and choose a type. Steps run top to bottom.

| Step | What it does |
| - | - |
| Wait | Pauses the sequence for a number of minutes, hours or days |
| Send email | Sends one of your custom emails |
| Condition | Splits the sequence into a Yes lane and a No lane |
| Add tag | Adds one or more partner tags |
| Remove tag | Removes one or more partner tags |

Each step type is covered in detail in [Campaign steps explained](/knowledge-base/campaigns/campaign-steps-explained).

A sequence with no **Wait** steps runs all at once, so put a wait wherever you want time to pass.

### Choosing the email a step sends

A **Send email** step has a dropdown listing your program's custom emails. Pick one, and you can preview or edit it without leaving the builder.

If the email you want does not exist yet, click **Create new email** on the step. You can start from a blank email or from one of your existing ones, and the new email is selected on the step as soon as it is created.

***

### Set exit conditions

The **Exit** card closes the sequence. Exit conditions are checked before every step, and a partner who matches leaves the campaign immediately — they are recorded as having left early rather than completing.

Click **Add condition** to add one. A condition checks either a metric (signups, customers, revenue) or whether the partner has a given tag. With more than one condition, choose whether a partner leaves when **any** of them match or only when **all** do.

Exit conditions are optional. Without them, a partner stays until the last step.

A common use is to stop a nudge sequence the moment it works: if the campaign is chasing a partner for their first sale, exit on *Customers greater than or equal to 1*, so nobody gets the second reminder after they have already succeeded.

***

### Switch it on

Open the campaign and turn on the switch under its name, or use **Enable** from the list.

A campaign can only be switched on once every step is filled in. If something is missing, Partnero lists exactly what — for example *Step 3: choose an email to send.* — and leaves the campaign off. Steps inside a branch are named by the path to reach them, like *Step 5 / Yes / step 1*, so you can find them.

Partners start entering as soon as the campaign is active. What happens to partners who already qualify depends on the trigger:

* Event triggers — joining, first signup, first sale, first commission, reaching a milestone, being tagged — only enrol partners from the moment the campaign goes live. Nobody is enrolled retroactively for an event that already happened.
* **Partner inactive for X days** and **Partner hasn't referred in X days** are checked hourly against everyone, so partners who are *already* past the threshold are swept in on the first check after you switch the campaign on. If you set 30 days and you have partners who have been quiet for a year, they all enter at once.
* **Partner anniversary** matches the exact day, so it only catches partners whose anniversary falls on or after the day you switch it on.

<Warning>
Before switching on a campaign that uses inactivity or no-referrals, check how many partners already meet the condition. The first sweep enrols all of them.
