# Create commissions with AI or presets

> Start your commission structure from a ready-made preset, or describe it to the AI assistant and apply the changes it proposes

You don't have to build a commission structure field by field. Partnero gives you two shortcuts:

* **Commission presets** — common structures, such as 30% lifetime recurring or tiered rates, that fill in the
  commission form for you.
* **Build with AI** — describe the structure in your own words, and the AI assistant proposes the exact changes for
  you to apply.

Both work on the same settings you can edit by hand, so you can fine-tune the result afterwards. See

## Start from a commission preset

1. Open your affiliate program and go to **Settings** under **Program**. Scroll to the **Commission** section.

2. Under **Commission type**, click **Browse commission presets**. You can also open the presets from the
   **Need inspiration?** banner at the top of the commission rules window.

3. In **Quick commission setup**, filter by category and select a preset:

   | Category | Presets |
   | - | - |
   | **Most popular** | 30% lifetime recurring, $100 per sale, 25% + $50 first sale bonus, 50% for first 3 months |
   | **Tiered & Performance** | 20% → 25% → 30% after 10 and 25 customers, $50 → $75 → \$100 per sale after 5 and 15 customers |
   | **Hybrid (Commission + Bonus)** | 20% recurring + $50 first sale bonus, 25% recurring + $25 per sale bonus |
   | **Time-limited** | 100% of first payment, 40% for first year |
   | **Declining over time** | 30% for the customer's first 6 months, then 20%; 40% for the customer's first 3 months, then 25%; 35% for the partner's first 6 months, then 25%; 40% for the partner's first year, then 30% |

4. Click **Apply**. The preset fills in the commission form.

5. Review the result in the **Commission** section and click **Update** to save. Until you save, nothing changes
   for your partners.

>
> A preset replaces your current commission structure. It sets the commission type, default commission and
> commission period, replaces your dynamic and time-based rules, and removes your product and goal rules. Your
> currency, discount-based adjustment, multi-level commissions and other options stay as they were.

Tiered, bonus and declining presets work by adding
[dynamic](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/commissions-rewards/create-dynamic-commissions.md) or
[time-based](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/commissions-rewards/create-dynamic-commissions.md#change-the-rate-by-customer-or-partner-age) rules. A rule's rate replaces
the default commission when the rule matches, and uses the same commission type as the default commission. Check the
rules the preset added under **Commission rules** before you save.

## Build commissions with AI

The [AI assistant](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/using-partnero-ai/ai-assistant.md) can read your current commission structure and
change it for you. It can set up:

* The default commission, commission type, currency and commission period
* Dynamic and time-based rules, including rules
  [limited to partners with certain tags](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/commissions-rewards/create-dynamic-commissions.md#limit-a-rule-to-a-group-of-partners)
* Product, goal-based and multi-level commissions
* The discount-based adjustment
* The payout threshold, commission rounding, maximum commission, review period and claim period

To use it:

1. Open your affiliate program and go to **Settings** under **Program**. Scroll to the **Commission** section.
2. Click **Build with AI**. It's next to **Set up rules** (or **Manage rules**), and in the commission rules window.
3. The assistant opens on a new conversation, **Build your commission structure**. Pick a suggestion or describe
   what you want, for example:
   * *Pay 25% recurring for the first 12 months*
   * *Give 40% to partners with 10 or more paying customers*
   * *Pay 30% on the Pro plan and 20% on everything else*
   * *Turn on 2-tier commissions with 5% for the inviting partner*
   * *Explain my current commission structure*
4. The assistant checks your current setup and asks for anything it's missing, such as product IDs, tag names or
   thresholds.
5. Review the proposal. Under **Apply will:**,     the assistant lists every setting it will change. If something isn't right, reply in the chat and it will revise the proposal.
6. Click **Apply changes**. The changes are saved straight away — you don't need to click **Update**.
7. If the program settings page is open, **reload the page** before saving anything else on it. Otherwise saving
   the old form would overwrite the changes the assistant just made.

Nothing changes until you click **Apply changes**. The proposal is checked again when you click it, and if it's no longer
valid, nothing is changed and an error is shown instead.

>
> Describe the rate you want in each case, not the difference. Dynamic and time-based rates replace the default
> commission rather than adding to it, so "an extra 5% for top partners" on a 20% default becomes a 25% rule. If a
> request is ambiguous, the assistant asks you to confirm the exact rate.

You need permission to edit program settings to apply commission changes. Each applied change is saved as a new
version, so you can review or compare it later in
[commission history](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/commissions-rewards/viewing-previous-commission-versions.md).

### Refer-a-friend and newsletter programs

The assistant can also change rewards in refer-a-friend programs and reward tiers in newsletter referral programs.
In a newsletter program, click **Manage via AI** in the reward settings. In a refer-a-friend program, open the
[AI assistant](https://docs.partnero.com/knowledge-base/using-partnero-ai/ai-assistant.md) and describe the change, for example *Give the friend
20% off and the referrer 10 USD per sale*.
